The first step

Many patients are entering therapy for the first time and do not know what to expect.  It can be hard to make the decision to seek treatment because it means acknowledging that you need help.  Taking the first step also means that you are ready to make a positive change in your life, however, and seeing it to completion can bring numerous self rewards.

SERVICES

Nola Litwins, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychology

Psychotherapy:

Dr. Litwins takes a cognitive behavioral approach to the treatment of anxiety, depression, self-esteem, anger, pain management and relationship issues.  She incorporates the use of behavioral techniques, such as relaxation and meditation, as well as the use of reading materials and assignments to facilitate behavioral change.  Dr. Litwins can also provide grief counseling.

Patients with chronic illness.

Patients who are dealing with chronic illness face unique challenges.  Many patients suffering with disorders like lupus, fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue and chronic pain disorder are trying to remain functional holding jobs and raising families.  Other patients have had to seek disability and struggling with their "new identity."  Regardless of how supportive friends and family are, patients struggle to feel "heard" and to figure out how their illness is going to shape their lives.  Dr. Litwins spent her graduate training in a teaching hospital where she gained experienced dealing with patients with chronic and terminal illness, such as cancer.

Psychological Testing:

Dr. Litwins provides evaluations for adults experiencing difficulties with emotional functioning, attentional problems and cognition.

Geriatric Assessment and Treatment

Dr. Litwins provides evaluations for elderly patients who may be dealing with cognitive or emotional changes as the result of disease or the aging process.  She works closely with physicians to evaluate the need for medication management, services within the home or placement into a facility, such as assisted living or retirement.  She also specializes in providing treatment to mature patients whose psychological needs are different than their younger counterparts.

Cognitive Rehabilitation

Cognitive rehabilitation involves instruction and retraining of cognitive skills after a brain injury.  Even after a mild stroke or brain injury, individuals may find themselves struggling with basic tasks, such as processing information, remembering things and staying focused.  Cognitive rehab can help them to "re-train" their brains to be more efficient and functional.  Dr. Litwins can provide services for individuals who have already completed a formalized program of rehabilitation and still need "a little more" or to individuals who have experienced a brain injury, but whose deficits are not significant enough for entry into a rehab facility.

"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."

Life Coaching

Life coaching has gained popularity in the past several years for individuals who are looking to make change in their lives, but who would not necessarily seek psychotherapy.  Life coaching is provided by a number of individuals with varied levels of training.  Psychologists are uniquely suited to be life coaches because we have extensive training in behavior change. Life coaching is not covered under insurance.  Dr. Litwins would complete an initial consultation and then work with the patient on the best course of action.  Typically, this would involve recommending a specific number of sessions to complete goals set out by the client.

Wellness Support Groups

Dr. Litwins is available to provide wellness support groups within physicians' offices or other settings to help patients dealing with specific medical problems or life challenges.
